Arsenal - which strikers could they try to sign? Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko, Santiago Gimenez, Victor Osimhen, Victor Gyokeres analysed

Arsenal are looking to sign a striker in January to support forward Kai Havertz and maintain their Premier League title bid after Gabriel Jesus suffered a long-term injury - but who could they sign?

Arsenal have been credited with a long-term interest in Alexander Isak.

Newcastle do not want to let their star striker go and he is in the very top bracket of strikers in the world, in terms of valuation, potentially costing north of £100m.

The Sweden international has three years left on his Newcastle deal and the club are also interested in giving him an extension.

"That is what you have when you have the real quality up front," said Mikel Arteta after Isak inspired Newcastle's 2-0 victory at the Emirates in the Carabao Cup. It felt like a pointed comment to the club's hierarchy about what he is still missing from his squad.

Benjamin Sesko is another long-term Arsenal target and one they looked closely at in the summer.

The Slovenia international was expected to move somewhere in the summer, with interest also from Manchester United, but he stayed at RB Leipzig.

Sesko is still young at 21 but he already has more than 100 senior games under his belt for RB Salzburg and Leipzig, 26 appearances in the Champions League and 39 caps for his country. A return of 30 goals in 66 Bundesliga games is seriously impressive.

Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez is one of the next top strikers emerging in Europe, scoring a glut of goals for Feyenoord.

He was another expected to move last summer, attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, but he stayed.

The 23-year-old may be behind others in his development and the Eredivisie is not as strong a league, but the potential is huge and he looks the part.

Long established as one of the top strikers in Europe, all the expectation in the summer was a move to Chelsea for Victor Osimhen.

However, when that did not materialise and with his position at Napoli untenable in the process, he went on a season-long loan to Galatasaray.

Osimhen has continued to do exceptionally well there and his long-term future still needs to be established. He would no doubt score goals with the Gunners too.

Sweden's other top emerging goalscorer has stepped up since he arrived at Sporting from Coventry City.

Premier League clubs looked at Viktor Gyokeres but passed at the time, allowing him to go and develop under Ruben Amorim in Portugal.

Amorim has said he would not raid Sporting for players in January as he looks to improve Manchester United, but a summer move to Old Trafford has been widely touted given their relationship.

Analysis by Insportly' Nick Wright:

Arsenal are active in the transfer market and ready to act if the right opportunity arises. Whether they will, though, is another question.

Arteta has highlighted the difficulty of finding attainable players who can make Arsenal better. "Bringing in bodies doesn't help us at all," he said last week. "It's about somebody who can immediately impact our performance and bring something we don't have."

He has a point, of course. It is no good signing someone for the sake of it. But all signings come with an element of risk. Even the 'perfect' player may not produce the desired impact. By the same token, you can be rewarded for gambling on a seemingly imperfect option.

Liverpool's attack shows why. Diogo Jota, for example, has flourished at Anfield despite having never scored more than nine goals in a Premier League season prior to his move from Wolves.

Darwin Nunez is a long way from justifying his price tag, of course, but Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, both signed for relatively affordable fees by today's standards, continue to deliver value for money, the former doing so immediately after his arrival mid-season in 2022.

Then, of course, there is Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has proved a phenomenal success but, although productive in Italy, he was far from a guarantee when he arrived from Roma having previously failed to make an impact in the Premier League with Chelsea. There are lessons there for Arsenal.

Already paying the price on the pitch for their failure to strengthen in the summer, they surely cannot allow another window to pass without taking action - even if it means compromising on what they are able to get.

The January transfer window is OPEN!
