Sony Open: England's Harry Hall takes share of the early lead after Hideki Matsuyama impresses

England's Harry Hall raced into a share of the early lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii as last week's winner Hideki Matsuyama also made a strong start.

Hall mixed 10 birdies with two bogeys and a double-bogey during an eventful opening-round 64 at Waialae Golf Club, leaving him in a group of six players sitting top of the leaderboard.

Adam Schenk, Eric Cole, Denny McCarthy, Paul Peterson and Eric Cole - who held the first-round lead at The Sentry last week - complete the logjam on six under, with Sweden's Henrik Norlander one of six players sitting a stroke back and in a share of seventh.

Former major winners Brian Harman and Webb Simpson are both within two of the early lead, while Matsuyama - who posted the lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history on his way to victory last week - is three behind as he chases back-to-back wins in Hawaii.

Inspired by Matsuyama, 16-year-old Mao Matsuyama - who holds no relation to his senior countryman - made his PGA Tour debut at the event, earning a sponsor exemption after becoming the youngest player to win the Japan Amateur.

Hall - who finished tied-eighth in the season opener last week - rolled in from 11 feet at the second and holed from a bunker to birdie the next, then responded to bogeying the par-three fourth by birdieing both his next two holes.

He took two attempts to get out of a greenside bunker on his way to a double-bogey at the par-fourth eighth but birdied each of the next four holes, with the Englishman adding another at the 16th before cancelling out a bogey at the 17th with a two-putt birdie at the par-five last.

"I played really nice, really aggressive, putted really good and drove it exactly where I was looking today," Hall said. "If I can clean up a few things that happened, a couple bogeys and the double, it'll hopefully be a really good week."

Speaking about his strategy, Hall added: "If you have confidence in the driver then it really makes a big difference. It's quite a tight golf course so if you can hit a driver straight then you're obviously gaining a few strokes on the field and that's exactly what I did."

Schenk, Cole and McCarthy all posted six birdies in their opening rounds, while Hoge's blemish-free start contained two eagles - one from 15 feet at the par-five ninth and the other a hole-out from the rough at the par-four 14th.

Peterson looked set for the outright lead after a birdie at the par-four 12th took him to seven under for the day, only for him to bogey two of his next four holes and need a final-hole birdie to compete the group in top spot.

Play was suspended due to darkness at 6.10pm local time (4.10am GMT) with seven players left to complete the first round. The first round will resume at 7.45am (5.45pm GMT) and the second round will begin as scheduled at 7.10am (5.10pm GMT).
